The requirement to be a thane is a 10W skill. The CLAN champion has 10W2 combat skill, and he (or she) is a full-time professional and (almost certainly) the best fighter i the clan.

A village can not support a full-time professional magician, and even if it could, the village magician would not be better than the clan's best magician, who by analogy has an ability of 10W2. If the village's best magician is a thane, their ability will be about 10W.
