RE: archery

I have been toying with the complications presented by archery again recently, and wanted to poll thoughts on how it is being used mechanically.

There are two major situations to consider - when the archer is part of a larger melee, and the archer firing against an approaching unengaged enemy.

In the larger melee scenario, the archers can simply add their archery AP as a contribution to the overall effort. The archer can freely support any other actor - the archers AP's act as a follower for as long as "fire support" is provided. The archers "action" constituters choosing which actor to provide support to. If the actor that the archer is supporting is defeated, the archer dos NOT suffer a similar defeat, or a follower-type defeat.

The approaching enemy scenario is a bit more complicated. I don't like the idea that an extended contest of this type should result in injuries to the archers. The model produces one of two results only: the archers are caught and destroyed, or the approaching troops are destroyed by arrow fire.

It might be done with an AP contest vs the attacking troops movement value, with the archers considered not to be subject to physical threat. The extent to which the archers are defeated indicates... what? I dunno. The extent to which the approaching troops are defeated could be treated as a normal combat defeat.

If the attacking troops maken contact with the archers, then I would think we have to start a new contest. Perhaps the archers outcome is influenced by their degree of defeat in the previous exchange?

Anyway, just fishing for ideas...
