As Sinbad or Odysseus, I think that Diros and Dormal, being travelling heroes, tend to be largely cross-cultural. Maybe the myths and the rites are different from place to place, but a core description is probably the same in many places. I think the use of Kallyr as a vehicle is a metaphorical meaning: Kallyr's use of the star is propedeutical for the summoning of the Brown Dragon, but she doesn't ride in the sky aboard Anaxial's Ship.

Ah ah! Fine image. Turtles are connected with the element of Earth in the green age (do you mean sea turtles or land turtles, here, TI?). Probably the Brown Dragon has the look of a giant (walking, not flying or swimming) Gamera Monster. YGMV. The reference to the old Turtle in Snake Pipe Hollow is one of my favourites in that classical scenario.
