I was mooching around the web the other day, and came across four linked essays proposing the "Interactive Toolkit". They're at:

There's some good stuff in there: the idea of recasting RPGs as "Storytelling entertainments" and some discussion of why hit points are a really bad idea. It's well worth a read.
