Forgot to mention that D&D3E increased the speed at which people 'leveled up' because Market Research told them that the length of time between restarts (roll up new characters and start again) was low (about 6 months I think), so the rate of advance was increased to allow people to play throught the typical power progression of a character within that time frame. 50 sessions a year on-going campaigns are great, but may well not be the norm, and those players may have to adjust progression rates rather than the others.
