And well worth the reading. The one problem is that the first book (_The Pride of Chanur_) isn't as good as the trilogy that follows. And on the DF front David Brin's Uplift series (especially _Brightness Reef_ and sequels) doesn't quite qualify but does include some non-humans in significant roles
