Your first unspoken assumption - that Blackhorse County is a normal human society - is wrong. The County is an army that has fought its way to hell and back. It is about as normal as the surface of the Red Moon, the Dragon's Eye or the Tunnelled Hills. Hence populationbased  arguments that Sir Ethilrist's army should be much smaller are doomed to failure.

Ethilrist's army do have stirrups as they are a Malkioni invention (mentioned in Anaxial's Record p72) that was introduced into Peloria during the Imperial Age. How they hold their lances isn't particularly important but trying to ban couched lances on the grounds that RQ2 said Glorantha is a bronze age world is to misrepresent what RQ2 actually said (don't bother debating here - it's a digest arguement).
