Great post from Gerald.

And that sums it up perfectly. In the places like Far Point, where *entire clans* of Orlanthi and Elmali manage to stay out of the way and live relatively unmolested in remote corners of the gors, its not difficult for small groups to hide and prosper. As soon as they come near a road, of course, that changes. Sartar has plenty of wild places as well, and most humans tend to stay well clear of marshlands great or small.

In fact, the biggest problem for ducks is that chaos such as broo are also drawn to marshlands, for the same reasons.

My own vision of durultz life involves semi-autonomous nests of perhaps a dozen adults being the norm. These are usually based in secluded crannogs or riverside reed beds. Being gathers, fishers and gardeners by nature, its relatively easy for ducks to survive out of sight of humans. And the race has always been secretive, so when the bounty was introduced they already had hundreds of hideaways and were well used to keeping their whereabouts secret.

As to the original question from Antonio:

I believe the bounty is still in force, and continues right up until Fimbulwinter. (It's still technically in force afterwards, but survival for everyone becomes too bitter a struggle for it to have much force any more). The bounty is a good Lunar divide-and-conquer technique, and provides a monetary outlet for bloodthirsty Heortlings who might otherwise become thunder rebels.

I personally believe that yes, there are a good number of durultz communities in the Upland Marsh, on The River, in Beast Valley, the Far Place gors and in Sartarite marshlands that have survived relatively whole. There are an equal number of desperate, decimated, dying communities where only a few hardy fighters survive as bandits and thieves.

While in understand the situation in your Glorantha, in mine the duck bounty does not differentiate between Orlanthi and non-Orlanthi durultz, between their tribes or place or origin. IMG any duck, keet or swan child is fair game. The duck pogrom is not *meant* to encourage thinking or reflection, its to give vent to the basest emotions of fear, powerlessness and violence. Any racially based hate campaign defines its 'enemy' only in the most basic, stereotypical terms.

And though this is entirely my personal vision, I believe that some ducks mistrust Orlanth as the trickster who stole their powers of flight - IMG Poveri and Canarda (a pondish Ernalda) are the chief gods of the duck pantheon. See http://home.iprimus.com.au/pipnjim/DvB/#bandits. While this is humourous (and comic distortions always seem to intrude in some way when dealing with ducks), I'm glad to see that they are also being taken seriously, for they're a wonderful race full of surprises. Seriousness and humour can cooexist, as we've discovered with Uz.

Cheers

John
