The scary thing came out as rather silly. What I'm after is that the husband protector role is a way for the matriarchy to put a leash on (potentially) dangerous male cults. The cult of Humakt, the

great god of death, cannot be controlled in that way, because death is
uncompromising. So, to the matriarchs, Humakti are scary not because
they worship death, (as you say, so do the Babeester Gor maidens), but
because their single-minded focus makes their cult uncontrollable through the husband protector mechanism.

That sounds probable, and more acceptable as it is not a disruptive male cult.
