While HeroQuest is definitely more cinematic than RuneQuest, it can still be played in a very gritty fashion by reducing all Hero Point awards. If you leave it entirely to luck, as did the James Bond 007 game, heroes become much less prone to sudden and amazing successes than before. Adapting the James Bond 007 approach would entail only giving out HP on critical rolls (the equivalent of a Quality Rating 1 in James Bond), whether natural or due to Mastery bumps. It makes heroes even nastier when facing Average Joes, but then it is a very regular device of the heroic genre to build up before taking on the villain by beating the crap out of his or her henchmen. :)
