However, Cyrlings have been used as the generic "moderately friendly
clan over the hill" and the Black Oaks as the generic "enemy clan" in
a number of HW/HQ publications. So really, they are meant to be
dropped into whatever tribe you wanted. Note too that the three
clans don't have to be in the same tribe. Having the somewhat
friendly tribe over the hill be in a different tribe can be the
source of good story material, and certainly it is probably common
that your most disliked enemy is in another tribe (although certainly
they'll be in yours sometimes too).
I think your best bet might be to read through the tribe descriptions
in Barbarian Adventures and see which one most makes stories jump to
mind for you. Is it the lonely Tres, stuck in the almost otherwordly
mists of the Far Place? The proud Colymar laboring under their
amitious and ruthless king? The sword tribe, busily tearing itself
apart since it can't strike at its enemies? etc. I think it is much
easier to just use the clan names where you want them than to try and
work with a background setting that doesn't inspire you as much as it
could.
