But in a lot of respects Vingans are religiously and socially "men" just as Nandan worshippers are "women". The followers of the Red Woman subcult even give up their fertility (at least so long as they remain members).
And then there is an embarrassment factor of having a wife who can fight as well or better than you. Quite a problem in Heortling society :-)
