I'm mostly a narrator, but I play as well, so:
>What are you looking for when you play a Gloranthan game of
>Heroquest?

>to kill stuff
>to grab treasure
>to become an emperor

None of the first three above, certainly; they just don't interest me. I
want to negotiate with NPCs, to explore a different world, to think
about things from a different perspective, to explore and develop my
character's personality. I want to solve problems, by which I don't
mean pre-written puzzles like anagrams or mathematical conundrums, but
mysteries, or ways around obstacles. In fact, I want to be able to find
ways of acheiving my goals without killing stuff, if at all possible. In
fact, my current character (non-Gloranthan, BTW) is a pacifist, and is
currently in a situation where he's having to deal with a really
determined, magically powerful, and probably quite violent, opponent out
to destroy much of what he believes in. And the opponent in question
happens to be his former mentor, who he grew to like and respect over
the course of many years. *That's* the kind of interesting challenge I
like to face - character and story-based, complex, and (from the PC's
side of things, anyway) essentially non-violent.
