Whenever they can. I think the Horse-Spawn might be a prime target though they have no cattle. However, the vendref villages are almost helpless -- poorly defended compared to Joe Heortling's stead.

True. And the King has the money they don't. Especially if your homeland is a bit of a wasteland. I'm seeming to recall that after the Thirty Years War, mercenaries were a prime export of the Holy Roman Empire. Good warriors with no one to pay them. And if they weren't paid, they became bandits.
