It only became officially herditary with Yarandros. The fact that Varstapor
and Ovartien were sons of previous rulers is coincidence. see KoS p118;
Yarandros claims kingship because of his inheritance, which is new and
shocking. I am, of course, nitpicking.
Also of note is Big Tarkalor who named eight ancestors to qualify himself (as king of Tarsh) and send 9000 warriors to back up that claim. This sounds like Might making BirthRight, and quite right too.
