And keep in mind that a needle for tattooing is a lot easier to make than one for sewing. It doesn't need an eye, for example (which seems to be the most difficult and time-consuming part of the process), and it doesn't need to be particularly smooth or polished or regular-shaped, except at the very tip.

All that makes it much more plausible that a clan could make its own tattooing needles as necessary.
