One doesn't even need chaos. The burning of the forests will result in terrible erosion. The torrential rains wash away the topsoil, and coupled with grazing this changes the former forests to a dry grassy plains.
This being Glorantha, there are of course magical explanations as well.
Then again Pavis Country, I think, was properly taken care of during the EWF days of Pavis, and is still pretty lush and fertile.
