I'm only just finally starting in a game (PBEM) so I can't answer that latter question, but I do have a comment on their importance.

When it comes to magic, community support is really channeled through a guardian/wyter, I think. That is, you aren't really a "community" in Glorantha, and so can't give spiritual support, if you don't have a guardian.

Now, since most groups have guardians, most people will get similar augments from them, so usually these will roughly balance out. Hence just ignoring them a lot of the time may not matter much--kind of like ignoring arms and armor except when there is a major imbalance. But they can at the very least add some flavor, and the variance in their blessings will help distinguish one group from another.
