Yes, certain bits have to be, unless you insist on every player buying their own rulebooks, background books, and so on. Having the basic rule sets as a free dowon-load helps no end, but sometimes you need keywords and so on available as well.

It doesn't have to. Yahoo groups can be set up to be off-directory, members only, by invite only. At which point your RSS feeds stop working, but that's life.
