I came up with my theory back when I assumed that Lokomoko was defeated after Harmast's LBQ. Turns out that Lokomoko was defeated at the Battle of the Verge - same time as Harmast was successfully initiated. That chronology just doesn't work - as a result, Arkat had no need at all to sever himself from Orlanth. He did have a need to sever himself from his old ties and essence-self. And to be able to wield Death on a massive scale.

Arkat was always very respectful of the gods he followed and the cults he joined - until he betrayed them. The hatred that exists between Humakti and Zorak Zoran probably was knocked up a notch as a result of Arkat leaving Humakt to become Kingtroll. Makla Mann was possibly the only Humakti leader to remain loyal to Arkat after the great Betrayal - and I suspect Makla Mann despised his liege, but remained loyal to him because of the oaths he swore. I think the Humakti truly despise Arkat - remembering him mainly as Kingtroll the Betrayer.

I think that is Arkat's legacy - he betrayed Humakt, stole his secrets and gave them to Zorak Zoran.
