Re: Kolatis' daily bread?

Fun people, Kolatings.

I suspect that most Orlanthi really don't know how to relate to Kolatings and regard them as creepy and unnatural, even if they accept that they have a role. All sorts of superstitions abound, like not meeting a Kolating's gaze (thanks to Simon Bray for that idea!). After all, these people live partly in your world and partly in some completely different one, not even Orlanth's!

As regards subsistence, some foraging may well be part of their shamanic preparations as they gather those strange mushrooms and those berries that poison the rest of us. They may well also be paid for their services - in KoDP, they keep cropping up to sell goodies, raise curses or cast them, expecting payment.

But they are probably also treated in the same way that many RW societies treated the insane - 'touched by the spirits' - in that they are shunned and feared but not attacked, and probably given special latitude. They might wander into a village, take a loaf of bread and a chicken and wander out, and everyone would just pretend not to notice. Or food would be left out. Perhaps out of pity, perhaps fear, perhaps piety and perhaps a relieved 'there but for the grace of Orlanth...'

Concerning payback, as things stand - and this may change when Storm Tribe gives full Kolat rules - I don't think that theists generally can use fetishes.

Hope this helps a little!

Mark
