Well the same could be said for the budding theist hero. You emulate as long as that's what you're able to do, but when you can strike off on your own, you'll probably want to do that. The difference between those who can only follow the work of others, and those who create new paths, seems to me to be the sign of somebody who will eventually become followed themselves. Heroes for theists, Saints and master sorcerers (Delecti certainly must have forged his own way in the heroplane to get where he is) for Wizardry. Mythic ancestors for animism. That sort of thing.

Experimental heroquesting is dangerous, however, and not just anybody can get away with it.
