I do like your wild jungle adventures, but to truly get some more East Islands flavor, I would humbly suggest another obstacle: stumbling upon an half naked ascetic, deep in meditation.
Whether the Heroes disrupt the ascetics many years of mystic contemplation - perhaps if they are chasing after something - could cause some interesting social and magical interactions in addition to all fun jungle stuff.
If the Heroes are careful and respectful, the mystic may give them a blessing of some sort, or give them valuable information.
If the Heroes totally botch it, and disrupt the mystics long austerity, he may succumb to Temptation and curse them with misfortune.
The gender of this ascetic can be tweaked to fit your groups need. Falling in love with some exotic beauty who has taken vows of continence is also extremely Vithelan.
I really love the cannibal monkey idea, and may have to steal it wildly when my Teshnan and Lunar Heroes go exploring in the East.
