I think another big advantage of metal weapons is their durability. During an extended contest, when a Balazaring loses AP, he might also lose his spear tip (and the bonus it gives),
especially when used against metal weapons. IIRC, Pendragon had a rule where swords broke spears on any tied roll. You could use something similar.

I generally agree with David. You can use the rule that bone/stone weapons are "Lower Quality" weapons, yielding a general 1-point decrease in their normal bonus (so a Bone/stone spear is only a +2, as opposed to the guard's metal spear which is the normal +3 - HQ 79).

The Equipment bonus difference between a Balazaring hunter and a Citadel guard:

Balazaring
Armor: 0 (Doeskin clothes at best, not enough to be called armor) Weapon: +2 (Stone/Bone Spear)
Shield - not used.
Total: +2

Guard:
Armor: +1 to +3 (At least Light Armor, with metal bits it might be inferior medium armor; a mail or scale shirt and helmet would be top-of-the-line for +3)
Weapon: +3 (Standard metal spear)
Shield: +1
Total: +5 to +7

Pitting two newly created characters against each other, on Equipment and ability alone, it would be Balazaring 19 vrs Guard 2w-4w.
