The Volsaxi Library

I went to see some scrolls from the Volsaxi -- er -- Qumran library at the Pacific Science Center yesterday. The Dead Sea Scrolls on display there, and the Qumran community that apparently made them, might serve as a model for the Derensev library supported by Broyan.

At Qumran there was a community, probably of the Essene sect of Judaism (discussed in Josephus) who had a central complex for rituals and distribution of supplies. The monks themselves apparently didn't live full-time in Qumran -- they occupied caves and camps in around, and probably tended herds and some crops in the area. The library of scrolls wasn't physically located in Qumran, either, but was distributed in some 11 caves around it.

So the Derensev library might be based at one of Broyan's centers (Whitewall or Karstanstead), but its sages and scrolls might be scattered among secret locations all over Volsaxiland.

The one obvious difference: The Lhankor Mhy sages can "rescue" scrolls, in a pinch, by sacrificing them, adding them to their god's Otherworld library. I guess the Lunars could interfere with that, as well, if it came to it.

If you decide to go to the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit, buy tickets in advance online -- they sell out quickly.
