I see these sorts of absurdities all the time. I can make the same absurdities for any contest, "You win the simple contest, and that means that you didn't use any fuel at all!" It's always just a matter of coming up with the right narration of the outcome of the contest or round of EC.

For the example, the big transfer above might mean that, despite having to rush, the character discovered some shortcut in the process that he'd never thought of before, gaining him much valuable time. Or... well I could make up examples all day long.

The point is that the forge's "goal" of running out of coke does not automatically mean that the opposition succeeding indicates some opposite of that. The opposition's success means that something, anything reasonable, happened instead that put it at an advantage to win the contest. Consider the abilities that the opposition used, and an answer will become apparent.
