It all depends on whether you want a thorough read-through of one book, or reference material to consult, doesn't it? "Both" is nice. But my entire HW/HQ reference library fills either a few feet of shelf space (a very large and heavy rucksack) or part of an SD card in a PDA that takes a second to boot and fits in my pocket. Guess which I'll have with me at any given time? Yes, the PDA is hard to read, and the two-column layout is a pain even in hard-copy, but reading something that's miles away from me is even harder.

Also, even if I'm sitting next to that shelf, for some reason clicking on it and pressing ctrl-F doesn't do a lot :(

I'd like both. In many cases I've got both. But given a PDF and a printer, I can have both for the price of one. Buying just the hard-copy would not give me access to any of the PDF "additional features".
