I don't read the freshness rule as a prohibition against using an augment. It seems to be advice that an augment that is either a new ability in the current context, or an oft used ability used in an innovatuve way will be better recieved by the narrator and other players. And, as such will be less likely to be queried or questioned. I also tend to let the player have authority over which augment is used, but if it does not seem to fit one of the critera then I reserve the right to ask for more detail.

There is no requirement that an augment is fresh, the rule is "entertaining and memorable" the criteria list is for helping players decide how to apply this rule. Nowhere does it state that if you have used an augment in this manner before it is automatically vetoed, indeed it may satisfy one of the other criteria, or be entertaining or memorable in and of itself. Repetition is a well established story telling technique, when used skillfully it is very entertainging and by it's very nature memorable.

As an aside, I start with the idea that augments are not used in every contest, but rather when emphasis is required. My choice of when to augment is usually as an aid to investment. If I am already invested l often just reach for the dice.
