For what it is worth, this problem appears to be resolved. Plimus downloads when properly set up by a knowledgeable person are smooth and easy. Plimus downloads when incompetently set up by a game publisher are not so smooth and easy. Fortunately, the good people at Plimus showed me how to fix the problem.

It should now be as easy as anywhere else.
