Do Animists use Runes?

Hi!

Looking at the rules for Kolat and the general rules for animists, it seems to me that a Kolat worshiper needs the spirit rune (only?) to join the religion, and a non-shaman can use his or her other two runes for common magic. Do an animist's runes affect magic in any other way?
