catching up...

Yeah, I know, I'm catching up finally, but I got my copy of Thunder Rebels yesterday. Everyone else has praised it enough, I'll just quietly join them. Fantastic Stuff, really blew me away.

What struck me is how easy TR makes it to start a Heortling campaign. I mean, all you have to do is read the section on Daily Life, pick out the bits that have you going "Ooh! Now, that's a cool idea". Put the whole thing together in a semi coherent form and you have 12-20 sessions worth of "Life as a Heortling".

You know the style, Cattle Raiding, Clan Moots, Raids by the filthy Clan-across-the-hill, reprisal raids, Heroquests during droughts, all the while building up a group of NPCs the PCs can relate to and get to know. Pinch much stuff from KoDP.

Throw in a couple of curly ones like kinstrife (beloved cousin stabs his own brother, what do we do now?), broo infestation.

After a couple of seasons of play Lunar missionaries and traders start to come along. By now the PCs are avowed Heortlings and have seen enough to recognise the sheer perversity of the Lunars without too much prompting. The Clan begins to divide down the middle as to whether these are Chaos-loving-Red-Moon-Worshipping-Scum-Who-Should-Be-Destroyed or benevolent friends.

Make them make the difficult decisions and just when they've got a handle...

BAMF! Hit them with the full might of the Heartlander Corps, the Crimson Bat and the Battle at Runegate Fort. The Lunars invade and crush all before them. Make them watch Uncle Braggi get swallowed by the Bat and let them watch their brother get dragged off into a Lunar camp.

By the time you get to the Lunar bits, Sartar Rising will be out and you can weave it into your campaign elegantly.

Sound like fun.

Harry.
