This of course makes no allowance for the fact that only a small number of people would want to go off and do these tasks. Most people, even warriors, would be happy to stay at home and live nice comfortable routine lives. The heroes IMHO are the ones who will always step forward when volunteers are called for. They would be looked at as different due to their attitude, even if they were not the best warriors within the clan. Over time their selection for dangerous tasks would become a natural clan reaction as they would have a history of doing the impossible.

Remember the whole ability level thing is just a game mechanic. From the clan point of view the heroes are the ones who slew the mad regenerating three headed Broo. They are touched by greatness and would certainly be the clan rings natural choice for those strange jobs. After all you would always choose to send the people you think will succeed and past deeds counts for a lot to a myth based society.

A good example would be Gabriel in Xena. She left her village to adventure because she felt that she didn't fit in. The rest of her village simply couldn't understand this.
