Hi John - re: Farmer Giles... Umm, that's not necessarily a bad thing. :o)

If I remember correctly, I last read Farmer Giles in school... It's basically a pseudo-adult fairy tale-come-children's farce... perhaps. It was written after the Hobbit, and is similar in certain ways, but I certainly wouldn't place it on the same level. It centres on a comedic, thick famer, his dog, a magical sword and a dragon (you might be able to find an odd extract or review if you Google).

My favourite Tolkien was always the notes 'The Battles of the Fords of Isen', published in the 'Unfinished Tales'... focusing on the military core of the milieu, as is good and proper.
