I'd suggest that the next time you get the chance to try a real German lager, you do so. I used to have the same opinion. I was wrong.
Mexican lagers can also be nice. As can some Indian ones (just drink them *before* the curry, or you'll never know). Italian has also been mentioned.
But, as you say, avoid any lager bottled/canned in Britain. Also anything USA-based that you're liable to find over here, and anything Australian ditto. They may well have good lagers at home for all I know, but if so, they keep them there.
