'I'm from Kurri Kurri, mate. What are ya?'
Actually Jeff, I'm from New South Wales, from the vineyards area an hour and a bit north of Sydney, and I live in Canberra, the nation's capital, as artificial as DC if not a whole lot safer. To most Aussies, the best thing about Canberra is that you can jump in a car and within fifteen minutes you'll be back in Australia.
I actually love the place: I see snow in winter (rare in Oz), I bake in summer (fairly standard) and am surrounded by bushland and rain forest. Canberra is a university and government town, well planned, solidly middle class (sigh), smallish but filled with museums and galleries.
My work involves remote Australia (which may be the source of your
confusion), in fact I've just finished a rather large report on the Kimberleys, but travel these days is pretty rare. Dave Cake is a Sandgroper, as is Rusty Hoyle (both Perth). I can assure you, WA ismuch, much more than dingoes and dirt.
But then, in the finest traditions of this group, the entire thread seems to be about perspectives, parochialism and pretensions. Yours and mine included :)
And possibly, just possibly, about different standards of humour. I'm sure Australians have their blind spots too, but seppos never seem to understand taking the piss.
Now bugger off.
John
