Sartarite vs Lunar IS like Sunni v Shia - fundamentally complex and widely varying multi-faceted major cultures, with particular areas containing a minority of fundamentalist and ruthless leaders willing to do what ever is necessary to win.

(apart from the glaring difference than Sunni v Shia are two sects of the same religion, not different religions - not that this would have made much difference to the slaughter, the more comparable EWF v Alakoringites or Lokamayadonism vs Arkati Orlanthi struggles showed that internecine warfare can be just as nasty)

Is it worth the bother of listing some heroic fantasy in which both sides have a point, but both sides have some ruthless extremists? George R.R. Martins Song of Ice and Fire springs to mind most obviously.
