That's a very good way to put it....
I've done a deliberate 'crash and burn'... I've gotten down to about 450 clanmembers and 400 cows, I think. I was not quite paying attention to the exact numbers, though. When your farmers get to Grim and stay there for a while or you are starving for about a year, the Carls just pack up and leave.
Poof. No clan.
Which is kinda neat. I'm glad that ths is built into the game -- with this sort of ending, the Clans feel 'more alive' if that makes sense.
