I had some fun with tribe generation last night. I
decided on the initial choices I wanted to make
(Ernaldan/100 day hunt/balanced/wake
Issaries/pro-dragon/vast tracks of land/clan name=grey
cat/hard/long).
Then I went through tribe generation a whole bunch of
times. The results were interesting--although I
regret not saving my first trial, since it had the
most perfect starting ring I've ever seen.
- Only two out of nine trials gave me a Vingan.
- roughly 50/50 that my only ally was nearby or in the
farthest reaches of known land.
- 2 out of 3 feuding tribes always occupy the same
positions on the map, although variations in tula
shape make how much you touch each of them vary quite
a bit. The third feud varies from quite nearby to the
farthest reaches.
- One time I started off with 5 out of 18 leaders
being Chalana Arroy worshippers--and not one of them
had excellent magic. (I'm partial to Chalana Arroy
magicians on my ring, as a two-birds with one stone
sort of thing, except that of course Chalana Arroyans
would never throw a stone at a poor little bird...)
-By far the most common tula shape was a U, although
the exact form of the U varied from time to time. One
time I shared borders with just about every nearby
clan.
- A couple of times I didn't get an Ernaldan with
excellent leadership--hmmm, bet that would lead to
leadership squabbles!
- I believe there was one time that I didn't get an
Odaylan, but I'm not quite positive anymore.
- One time every single capable leader was over the
age of 55, another 6 out of the 7 most promising ring
members were under 35 (that was that first iteration
that I didn't save. *sigh*).
- Number of favors owed varied between 3 and 8, number
of favors due between 3 and 5.
Now, I'm not advocating trying again and again to get
the best possible starting position, but this
experience does suggest to me that if you start up,
and have a hard time getting excited about your tribe,
spinning the wheel again might give you something more
palatable. After all, you have to be able to identify
with the tribe to really get into the story.
Oh, I finally did keep one of them--not the best, not
the worst, but reasonably interesting. I reassigned
lots of farmers to hunters, then I recruited
weaponthanes. Then I had my first event--I got
flooded! Yup, the lord of the sea didn't wait long to
satisfy my curiousity about exactly how effective an
enemy he is! So lets loose 100 cattle and 1/3 of my
goods, plus some food I think (with the promise of a
bad harvest) at the start of a "hard" game......this
one should be REAL challenge *grin*
