Very true. However, the current situation means that youdo have to pay attention to how you are allocation your crops and fields -- which gives just enough of a hands-on feel for me. Something that automically adjusts could either a) get you into trouble or b) create a feeling of distance from the farming aspect... which addes to the earthy feel of the game, or so I think.

I tend to have 2x the recommended pasturage, just incase I get lucky with raids or get very busy for a year or two.

As metioned by someone else who's more on the ball than I, if you are in a 'cannot upgrade shrine' state, it won't let you even start a shrine till you have gotten more of the above requirements in hand. Did you check any of your other already existing shrines to see if you could upgrade them?
