Actually, the Orlanth and Aroka quest doesn't have to be as nasty as all that. As was suggested by others, you don't have to take all 99 blows. Just fight defensively for a bit but don't run. And when one meets the enemies, one should fight defensively again -- though I am not sure about this one.
It increases the survivablity of the hero greatly. And it also cuts down on permanent damage. Taking the 99 Blows for Orlanth really wrecks your hero and makes it much more difficult to succeed.
