My Webster's lists both plurals. Dwarves follows the
pattern of such words as shelves or calves--both
ancient words. >>
It does follow the pattern, but only because Tolkein said it could/should. 'Normal' english had them as dwarfs, only since JRR has anyone spelt them dwarves. I think dwarfs helps differentiate Gloranthan from Middle Earth shorties.
