This is actually in the documentation. What the chief and thanes think about you is one thing; what that clan as a whole thinks about you is something else, and your ringleaders comments are your only indicator as to that. OTOH, sometimes you get a gloomy Gus on the ring and your neighboring clans do what you want anyway.

Gifts. I kept a regular round of gifts to my allies and clanmates. When their name came up in the rotation, away went my emissary with 30 goods and whatever else I could spare: 200 food, 30 horses, sometimes even cows.

You can use:
Lawspeaker blessing
Sacrifice to Chalana Arroy for Hope
Feasts (good for keeping mood up, too)
Gifts
avoid losing battles
avoid having lots of sick/injured people make sure you have enough cows
when you split the clan, send off the trouble-makers and, the big one,
Choose event options which make people happy.
