I also found that starting with the largest tula
tended to result in death-by-a-thousand-cattle-raids.
Boost your patrols,make sure you have a watch tower,
make friends with as many neighbors as possible, and
if you get the event where the large boulder talks to
someone passing by, make sure to be nice to it--having
a spirit of the land helping your patrols is a huge
boost.
My preferred option for a new clan now is to start
with a smaller tula, then choose a target neighboring
clan to soften up and eventually steal some land from,
once we have the strength to protect it properly.
