They don't realize yet that releasing a game on the Internet, rather than in retail, gives it an arguably longer "freshness," since it won't be re-categorized to the back shelves or remaindered within three months.
And KoDP frankly looks/feels better than some of the RTS games last year, because the RTS genre is being pumped hard to keep its technology on the fast track. A game like Earth 2150, with its 3D playing field, virtually consigns 2D RTS games to the cut-out bin. KoDP doesn't have to worry about that.
Hobson's choice for developers/producers with small bucks is that they can release a game at the best times of the year (right before winter, in late spring), but that means competing with the Big Boys for media coverage; or they can release at other times and have a better shot at coverage, only the audience isn't really buying much.
