IIRC, that's not true. The benefit is that you can call on a favor even if you aren't owed one. But it still costs you.
It is a bit easier to deal with clans if they owe you, but on the other hand they are under no obligation to treat a gift as repayment of a favor. I've never gone around preemptively repaying -- it's not like a house loan, where you want to repay early to avoid all the interest.
