Well....have you set the proper amount of cropland to your number of carls? At the farming menu you should check the advice of your best "plant" advisor and see what that is.
Also, don't forget the rain and sun blessings if you don't already get them. They're mroe effective than preserve early on I think.
Finally the ernalda heroquest for better crops works well, but you can certainly get along fine without doing it.
