Actually, I checked the FAQ, which I should have done earlier. One of the reported fixes is to remove some fonts (I had far more than I realized, about 1000), and removed a couple hundred of them. Worked like a charm.

Perhaps someone else has solved this, or send us private e-mail. What message are you getting? (Perhaps nVidia's idea of small fonts doesn't match that current in 1999.)
