As often as not I fail at my first attempt to train them, so I'm only a little better than random at picking one over the other.

I will agree that the combat unit is C-O-O-L! Further, if you get it early on it can be a huge boost, since there will still be times that you are in big trouble in combat (later on I find you win most fights, and those you lose your fortifications mostly keep from being disasters). Probably I was turned off them a little bit because the first time I got them as a combat unit they died the second time I used them, so although I've seen them last a lot longer since then, I still view them as very fragile (!)
