This happened in a yahoo tekumel mailing list the other day.

The solution suggested there:

>>>

Ugh. Brett, would you consider invoking the "first post moderated" option for this list? It's very useful for spam prevention. I would be happy to help as a junior moderator if you like, and I'm sure others on the list would too.

Explanation for list members: Yahoo has an option for YahooGroups that moderates only the first post from a new member. This means that when a new member sends their first message to the list, it gets held in a queue that only the Moderator sees. It doesn't go to the entire group until the Moderator approves it. Once the new member has been approved, his subsequent messages go directly to the list. All current members would be "grandfathered in" so only future new members would be affected. This would mean a bit more work for the group moderator, but would prevent spammers from taking advantage our group.

We've used this approach for the Jorune group with success. <<<

This was implemented and seems to have worked so far.
