You've also got to consider this. Developers fear pirating. People already pirate things on CD. If you make the file completely internet ready, you've just saved the pirate guys all the work. They only have to crack the code, provide their own code, or provide a full version that requires no code. If the bastards are going to rip off the developer, they should at least have to spend EFFORT doing it.

Until there's a better way to protect developers, CDs at least don't make it sickeningly easy to pirate.
